How It Works
Lorazepam enhances the effect of a natural calming chemical in the brain called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA).
By strengthening GABA’s action, it slows down over-active nerve signals, which helps to reduce anxiety, tension, and restlessness.
People often describe the effect as feeling more settled or less on edge, rather than heavily sedated.
Typical Use and Dosage
This medicine should only be taken as prescribed by a doctor.
-
For anxiety, doses are often 1–4 mg per day, split into two or three smaller doses.
-
For sleep problems, it’s usually a single evening dose.
-
Elderly patients or those new to benzodiazepines start on lower amounts.
Tablets should be swallowed with water. Lorazepam is normally used for short periods (two to four weeks) to prevent dependence.
Possible Side-Effects
Common effects include:
-
Drowsiness, tiredness, or slower reaction times
-
Light-headedness or dizziness
-
Muscle weakness
-
Slight forgetfulness or confusion
Less common but more serious effects can include mood changes, breathing difficulty, or allergic reaction (swelling, rash).
If you notice anything unusual or severe, medical help should be sought immediately.
Precautions and Warnings
Lorazepam may not be suitable if you:
-
Have severe breathing problems, sleep apnoea, or liver disease
-
Suffer from depression or alcohol/drug dependence
-
Are pregnant or breastfeeding (it can affect the baby)
-
Need to stay alert for work or driving — it can cause drowsiness
Avoid alcohol or other sedative medicines while taking lorazepam. If treatment has lasted more than a few weeks, doses should be reduced gradually rather than stopped suddenly, to avoid withdrawal symptoms.
