How It Works
Alprazolam enhances the action of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter that slows over-active nerve signals in the brain. The result is a sense of calm, relaxation, and relief from anxiety within about an hour of taking a dose.
Typical Medical Use
Doctors may prescribe alprazolam for:
-
Generalised anxiety disorder
-
Panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia
-
Short-term relief of acute anxiety symptoms
It’s normally used for short periods only (usually 2–4 weeks) to avoid dependence.
Dosage and Administration
Alprazolam should be taken exactly as prescribed by a doctor.
Tablets are swallowed whole with water. Doses vary, but treatment often starts low and increases gradually if needed.
A 6 mg tablet represents a high total daily dose and is only prescribed in divided doses for specific clinical reasons. Never adjust your own dose or stop suddenly — your doctor will taper it down slowly if treatment ends.
Possible Side Effects
Common effects include:
-
Drowsiness or light-headedness
-
Slower reaction times
-
Dry mouth, nausea, or constipation
-
Reduced concentration
Serious but uncommon effects can include confusion, mood changes, memory problems, or withdrawal symptoms if stopped suddenly after long-term use.
Who Should Avoid It
Alprazolam may not be suitable if you:
-
Have severe liver or kidney problems
-
Suffer from sleep apnoea or other breathing difficulties
-
Have a history of alcohol or drug dependence
-
Are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding
Always inform your prescriber about other medicines you take — combining benzodiazepines with opioids, alcohol, or strong painkillers can cause dangerous sedation.
