How It Works
Methylphenidate increases the levels of certain chemicals in the brain — mainly dopamine and noradrenaline — which play a part in attention and impulse control. By balancing these signals, it helps the brain to regulate activity levels more effectively, allowing better focus and calmer behaviour.
Typical Use and Dosage
Treatment is always started and monitored by a specialist, usually in children and adults diagnosed with ADHD.
-
Tablets are taken once or twice a day, preferably in the morning and at lunchtime, to avoid sleep disturbance.
-
They should be swallowed with water, with or without food.
-
The dose is adjusted gradually by the prescriber to find the lowest effective amount.
Because Ritalin is a short-acting formulation, later in the day some people may switch to a long-acting (modified-release) version for convenience.
Never take more than prescribed or share the medicine with anyone else.
Possible Side-Effects
The most common effects include:
-
Difficulty sleeping (insomnia)
-
Loss of appetite or mild stomach pain
-
Nervousness or feeling “on edge”
-
Headache or increased heart rate
Less common but more serious reactions can include chest pain, changes in mood or behaviour, blurred vision, or circulation problems in fingers and toes. If these occur, medical advice should be sought straight away.
Precautions and Who Should Avoid It
Ritalin may not be suitable if you:
-
Have heart or blood-vessel problems
-
Suffer from severe anxiety, agitation, or glaucoma
-
Have a history of drug or alcohol dependence
-
Are taking certain antidepressants (MAO inhibitors)
-
Have an overactive thyroid or uncontrolled high blood pressure
Your doctor will check blood pressure, heart rate, and growth (in children) regularly while on treatment. Avoid caffeine and other stimulants as they may increase side-effects.
